Social media allows physicians to reach far larger audiences than was possible through traditional media outlets in the past. Many are using it to benefit patients by disseminating accurate health and medical information and countering false health claims.

Subspecialty and Combined Training Careers

Pulmonary Disease

Pulmonary medicine is the subspecialty of internal medicine that focuses on the diagnosis and management of disorders of the respiratory system, including the lungs, upper airways, thoracic cavity, and chest wall.

See all the career pathways open to internal medicine doctors.

In the Clinic

Pulmonary hypertension is the term used to describe a group of disorders characterized by abnormally high pressures in the pulmonary arteries. Initial evaluation is focused on identifying the cause, which helps guide appropriate treatment. Pulmonary hypertension is often a feature of advanced common diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and left heart disease, and treatment is focused primarily on the underlying disease. More rarely, pulmonary hypertension results from chronic organized thromboemboli or a primary vasculopathy. The former requires evaluation for surgical intervention, and the latter is treated with advanced medical therapies.

A Medical Student Program by the South Dakota Chapter

For many years, the South Dakota Chapter hosted a medical student event at the Sanford School of Medicine. But in 2011, in response to the decline in IM matches, chapter leadership decided to add a second event focusing on students who are at a critical point in making a final career choice. 鈥淎 Day In the Life of An Internist鈥 was created, inviting all students, but particularly those in the 2nd and 3rd year to attend a panel session that includes at least six general internists, hospitalists and sub-specialists, who share what life is like for the Internal Medicine physician (educational path, residency, daily practice and work/life balance).
