Background
1. I was born and raised in . . .New Orleans, LA.
2. As a child I was . . .very inquisitive, organized, persistent and goal directed.
3. I decided to be a doctor . . .after working in government after college. By then I really had the "fire in the belly" to pursue medicine even though I had grown up with it all around me.
4. The person(s) who influenced me the most . . .my late physician father, Emile E. Riley, M.D. a surgeon!....the Honorable Louis W. Sullivan, M.D. MACP, the President Emeritus of Morehouse School of Medicine and former Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services my Baylor Internal Medicine Program Director, Edward C. Lynch, M.D., MACP, Major W. Bradshaw, M.D., FACP, the former Dean of Medical Education at Baylor College of Medicine who gave me my first major academic leadership appointment as Assistant Dean for Education at Baylor, and the late New Orleans Mayor Ernest N. "Dutch" Morial who I had the honor of serving before beginning a career in medicine. These five extraordinary mentors and leaders have had a tremendous impact in my life for which I am incredibly grateful and thankful.
Career
5. I chose internal medicine because . . . it is intellectually challenging and provides continuity of care to diverse populations and settings. It was a perfect specialty to pursue as it complemented my strong interests in academic medicine, health policy, healthcare management and leadership in healthcare.
6. What I find most rewarding about my career is . . .the diverse experiences and many challenges.
7. I joined ACP because . . . it is the most effective specialty organization in the country at impacting patient care and the practice of medicine.
8. An award or achievement I am proud of . . .Mastership in the ACP, election to the Institute of Medicine and in High School…..Four Year Perfect Attendance Award...I've always loved school!!!!
9. My advice to medical students is . . ."seize the moment" and appreciate the tremendous societal privilege it is to be a medical student on the way to a fulfilling life as a physician.
Personal
10. I like people who . . .are honest, compassionate, empathic, engaged, persistent, hard-working and personable.
11. My family includes . . .my lovely, talented, very accomplished and supportive wife, Charlene M. Dewey, M.D., M.Ed, FACP who I met in medical school and our two daughters - Erin and Alexis who help to keep me grounded and balanced.
12. My interests/hobbies are . . .golf, spectator sports, travel, and reading mostly nonfiction.
13. If I had the time, I would like to learn . . .to play the piano!!
14. I enjoy listening to . . .I am a "jazzaphile"….love to listen to jazz and attend jazz concerts and performances in the leading jazz venues across the country….my favorites are the New York City legendary jazz venues: Jazz at Lincoln Center, Village Vanguard, BlueNote, Birdland and Iridium, Yoshi's in the Bay area and Snug Harbor in my hometown of New Orleans among many others. My music collection on my iPod and iPad include Duke Ellington, Count Basie Tito Puente, Coleman Hawkins, Wynton Marsalis, Trombone Shorty, Dianne Schuur, Terrence Blanchard and Joshua Redman. As I "came of age" in the 70's and 80's I also like Earth, Wind & Fire, Maze and AWB!
15. I enjoy watching . . .sports on TV.
16. My idea of a great vacation is . . .Pinehurst Golf Resort in N.C., the Caribbean, especially the Dominican Republic, Europe and Martha's Vineyard, MA.
17. Something others may not know about me is . . .I went to catholic schools from first grade through high school. My first school day at Yale was the first day I did not have to wear a uniform!
18. If I could be anything other than a physician I would be . . .an architect.
19. A person I greatly admire is/was . . . Former ACP President Gerald Thomson, Nelson Mandela. Mother Theresa, Lyndon Johnson, Barack Obama.

1. I was born and raised in . . .Kashmir, India.
2. As a child I was . . .diligent and quiet.
3. I decided to be a doctor . . . in eighth grade when I selected Pre-Med as an option for higher studies.
4. The person(s) who influenced me the most . . .My Grandmother and my mother: two educated ladies who were way ahead of their times in education, spirit and values.
Career
5. I chose internal medicine because . . . I looked up to all the Deans and the Internists on faculty, all men of course in the early nineteen eighties. My vision was to acquire and practice with all the knowledge they had.
6. What I find most rewarding about my career is . . . the variety of experiences from teaching students and residents to patient-care that is the center- stage of all activities and the ever-changing policies that keep us on our toes.
7. I joined ACP because . . . it is my professional home. It has presented me with opportunities to engage and exist with some of the brightest names and figures in medicine. This involvement has offered life-long learning opportunities that include learning and teaching medicine, health-care policy and leadership at the State and National level.
8. An award or achievement I am proud of . . .The Mastership of the College and the teaching awards in Internal Medicine.
9. My advice to medical students is . . . Medicine is a profession that you have chosen. Work hard at it, pick your area of interest wisely; the one you will continue to adore twenty years later

11. My family includes . . .my husband Parvez Mir MD, our two daughters and son -- all different and not in medicine!
