Medical Student Perspective

Youth's Oblivion

It was a regular morning. Getting up, quick shower and hurriedly brewing a hot cup of coffee that would end up cold by the time I arrived in the student parking lot on my first day of the internal medicine clerkship.

Advocacy Update

Winning Abstracts

Definitive Closure of a Ballistic Shotgun Injury with Extensive Soft Tissue Loss to the Right Thigh using ABRA Adhesive Dynamic Tissue System (DTS) and Porcine Urinary Bladder Matrix (PUBM)

Buckshot ballistic injuries have unique wounding characteristics, resulting in especially formidable and destructive wounds at close range. The pellets cause an anatomic defect with necrotic tissue and heavy bacterial contamination.

Subspecialty and Combined Training Careers

Infectious Disease

Infectious disease medicine is the subspecialty of internal medicine that focuses on diagnosing and managing infections. Although most common infections are treated by general internists and other specialty physicians, internists practicing infectious disease medicine are frequently called upon to help diagnose unknown infections and assist in managing difficult, unusual, or complicated infections.

In the Clinic

Transgender persons are a diverse group whose gender identity differs from their sex recorded at birth. Some choose to undergo medical treatment to align their physical appearance with their gender identity. Barriers to accessing appropriate and culturally competent care contribute to health disparities in transgender persons, such as increased rates of certain types of cancer, substance abuse, mental health conditions, infections, and chronic diseases. Thus, it is important that clinicians understand the specific medical issues that are relevant to this population.

Chapter Chatter

The NJ Chapter wanted to build a community where medical students would have a place to gather and discuss issues of importance to them. To that end, the Chapter created a page on the APCNJ website as a centralized platform for the initiatives of the new medical student-led ACPNJ committee, which is composed of student-representatives of every medical school in NJ. The goal of the committee is to provide additional resources and programming to NJ medical students interested in the field of Internal Medicine to promote excellence in clinical skills, involvement in research and healthcare advocacy, and to create a network of ACPNJ members at all levels to guide students through important transitions during medical school. .
