Mary M Newman MD, MACP
Mary M. Newman completed medical school at Creighton University School of Medicine, graduating first in her class. She then completed her internal medicine residency at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, followed by a year of general internal medicine fellowship in the Department of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University. She was a pioneer in having the first baby while serving on the Osler house staff, and finishing the program in good standing and on time. For the next 40 years, she served as a general internist in private practice in Baltimore and as a voluntary member of the teaching faculty of the Johns Hopkins Hospital, teaching and mentoring Johns Hopkins students and residents over the course of her career. She became the President of Flagship Health, a large physician-led organization, and most recently the President of Park Medical Associate, a prestigious model practice known for high quality state-of-the-art medical care. Throughout her career, Dr. Newman was the consummate clinician, teacher, and physician leader - she imparted medical knowledge, role modeled ideal communication skills, epitomized professionalism, practiced state-of-the-art compassionate primary care, and advocated tirelessly for the welfare of patients and their physicians. To recognize her contributions, she received numerous awards from Hopkins as well as the 管家婆心水论坛, the latter both at the chapter as well as national level. In 2013, Dr. Newman was elected Master of the ACP.
Dr. Newman served as the Governor of the Maryland Chapter of the ACP from 2006 to 2010, and has been an active member of that Chapter鈥檚 Council for over 20 years. She taught at multiple national ACP meetings, and participated actively at the national level in advocacy and advancing public policy as it relates to physician practices. She sponsored an ACP resolution that resulted in the creation of ACP鈥檚 annual Health Policy Internship. She regularly participated in ACP鈥檚 Leadership Day, and served as an important member of ACP鈥檚 Medical Policy and Quality Committee. In that role, she contributed to many ACP position papers. She served on Maryland鈥檚 Board of Physician Quality Assurance (our state medical board) and as a member of CareFirst Blue Cross/Blue Shield鈥檚 Physician Advisory Committee.
She has been a leader in areas related to clinical innovations in coding and appreciation of the cognitive contributions of internal medicine and its subspecialties for many years. She proposed payment for preventive care services for Medicare patients during her term as Governor. This was widely debated but eventually passed, through efforts in many venues by many individuals. She worked to secure a remuneration for chronic care management and transitional care management in her work as ACP鈥檚 Advisor to the American Medical Association鈥檚 Relative Value Update Committee. She continued to work to secure value and appreciation and eventually reimbursement for Advance Care Planning. She was involved in the adoption of behavioral interventions using the psychiatric collaborative model, and made innumerable trips to the Center for Medicaid and Medicare Services to teach and present this innovative change in improve behavioral health management for our patients. She collaborated with multiple organizations to accomplish these practice-changing goals, including the American Geriatrics Association, the American Academy for Hospice and Palliative Care, the Home Care Physicians, American Academy of Family Practice, and American Academy of Neurology.
Her contributions have helped enormously in creating reimbursement for services that support the Patient Centered Medical Home, as she helped it become a reality. She has lectured locally and nationally on these diverse practice innovations. She is passionate about the provision of safe and high-quality care to patients by ensuring that primary care physicians are enabled, motivated, and incentivized to provide that care. The Maryland ACP Chapter is proud to honor Dr. Newman by naming an annual award in her name to annually recognize a Chapter member for work in the area of advocacy on behalf of the patients whom we all serve.
