The primary goal is to achieve remission or to get the patient to be predominately symptom-free when considering treatment options. The PHQ-9 score of five is evidence-based but the value of putting a patient on medication to achieve remission if their PHQ-9 is six is unclear. There are other standardized tools to measure major depressive disorder (MDD) that are evidence-based and could be used in addition to the PHQ-9. The collection burden for this performance measure is moderate and physician control is low.
