Dear Colleagues,

I hope everyone has had a great summer with time to relax and recharge with friends and family. This time of year is always exciting as it marks the start of new academic beginnings with medical students, residents, and fellows all transitioning into the next step of their career. And for those who have just completed their residency or fellowship training, there is the excitement of having finally achieved their goals as a fully trained Internal Medicine Physician. We are proud to welcome the next generation of physicians and physicians-in-training to our profession and our chapter.

One of the best ways to connect with Internal Medicine Physicians around the state is to attend our annual Arkansas ACP Chapter Scientific Meeting which will be held live in Little Rock at the Doubletree Hotel Downtown on September 13th, 2024 with a virtual option available for those unable to attend in person. We have a great program lined up with updates in Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Diabetes Technology to name just a few along with the ever-popular Ten Particularly Interesting Medical Articles and an update of 管家婆心水论坛 National Advocacy efforts. During the day IM residents from across the state will be showcasing their poster abstracts and competing in the Oral Clinical Vignette competition and the Doctor's Dilemma Challenge for the chance to represent our state at the national IM 2025 meeting in New Orleans. I am looking forward to the opportunity to meet and network with our chapter members from across the state, to share challenges and solutions, and learn about new advances in Medicine.

New for this year we will also have a mini-reading retreat for Early Career Physicians, Residents, and Students the evening of September 12th before the chapter meeting. Dr. Eric Del Giacco and Dr. Maddie Williams will host a discussion of the book 鈥淏eing Mortal鈥 by Atul Gawande at the Copper Grill in Downtown Little Rock. The mini-reading retreat is limited to 20 participants and will hopefully whet everyone's appetite for the annual Arkansas ACP George Ackerman Reading Retreat in Spring 2025. I hope to see each of you there!

DEIC Presents: Harnessing the Power of A.I. for Health Equity

Sep 10, 2024 | 05:00 p.m. ET

Many physicians and leaders in healthcare lie awake at night contemplating the marvel of A.I. and envisioning its potential to transform health care, from clinical decision-making to population wellness initiatives. Yet with any new advances, there will be consequential concerns. And in particular, how might the A.I. technologies be used to 鈥榓dvance鈥 health equity? Or what cautions should be taken from lessons learned to potentially prevent A.I. tools from creating more healthcare disparities?

ACP's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee has selected this eminent topic to highlight the ways health care professionals are utilizing A.I. tools, and how to hear how they may be advantageous to improvements in care. By exploring perspectives of physicians, health system leaders, and A.I. implementors, this panel will illuminate some A.I. advances, the positives and cautions, and insights for adoption to improve equity in health care.

Featuring:

  • Toyin Falola, MD: AVP of Clinical Product Strategy at Providence Virtual Care and Digital Health
  • Tirissa Reid, MD: Obesity Medicine expert at Columbia University Vagelos College of Medicine
  • Ivor Horn, MD: Investor, Advisor, Board Member | Former Chief Health Equity Officer & Director of Health Equity and SDoH at Google
