Survey of physicians shows EHR system market share by vendor

AmericanEHR Partners release survey data results showing EHR vendor and product adoption

PHILADELPHIA, May 18, 2015 -- A new report from AmericanEHR Partners based on a survey of nearly 1,400 clinicians suggests that the electronic health records (EHR) marketplace for large practices is focused on a narrower selection of products in contrast to the larger variety of EHR systems being used in small practices.

AmericanEHR Partners provides comprehensive information to support clinicians in the selection and use of EHRs to improve health care delivery. It was founded by the American College of Physicians (ACP) and Cientis Technologies.

"Top 10 EHR Market Share Report 2014" looked at the market share of EHR vendors and products. The survey found that 60 percent of responses from practices with 26 or more clinicians were from users of only 10 different EHR products. In contrast only 51 percent of responses from practices with one to three clinicians were from users of 10 EHR products.

"The report found that responses from practices with 26 or more clinicians rated 96 different EHR products, meaning that the 40 percent of practices that used an EHR product other than the top 10 were spread out among 86 different vendors," said Shari M. Erickson, MPH, Senior Vice President of ACP's Division of Governmental Affairs and Medical Practice. "The key finding is that data shows that larger practices tend to be more focused on the same systems."

The survey data also breaks down responses by the total market share by EHR vendor and by EHR product. The dominant vendors among respondents were Epic Systems Corporation with 14 percent of the market and Allscripts Healthcare Solutions Inc., with 9 percent. The most used products were EpicCare Ambulatory EMR with 12 percent of the market; eClinicalWorks with 8 percent; and Practice Fusion, NextGen Ambulatory EHR, & Cerner Millennium PowerChart PowerWorks all tied for third place with 6 percent of the market. Data were collected between January 1, 2013 and November 6, 2014.

The market share findings broken down by practice size find that:

  • EHR product market share for solo practice shows Practice Fusion Inc. as the product with the largest market share at 15 percent.
  • The EHR product market share for one to three clinician practices shows Practice Fusion as the product with the largest market share at 12 percent.
  • The EHR product market share for four to 10 clinician practices shows EpicCare Ambulatory EMR as the product with the largest market share at 14 percent.
  • The EHR product market share for 11 to 25 clinician practices also shows EpicCare Ambulatory EMR as the product with the largest market share at 25 percent.
  • The EHR product market share for practices with 26 or more clinicians also shows EpicCare Ambulatory EMR as the product with the largest market share at 16 percent.
